Polybius (200 to 118 BC) denounced Pytheas’ work as a frabication and Strabo (63 to 24 BC) called him a liar which, in many ways shows how remarkable his voyage if 200 years later people still thought it impossible. However Timaeus (345 – 250 BC) took his reports at face value and quoted him at length as did Eratosthenes of Cyrene (276 – 194 BC), the chief librarian at the Great Library in Alexandria. ↩︎
